The grade fours participated in a Provincial Reading Challenge hosted by the public libraries. All students participated by reading 2 of the assigned 6 books. Kids that wanted to challenge themselves with reading more were put on teams and participated in the Dogwood Reading Link Challenge on March 9th. After three rounds of very specific questions, there was a tie. We went to a tie breaker round; still a tie!! Then after 5 sudden death questions, we had our winning team. The winning team moved on to the Community Competition on March 29.
Our Dogwood Dolphin team represented Dogwood well at the Community Competition at Surrey Sports Complex. They competed against 7 other teams from around the community. They showed great team work and calm under pressure as the questions continued to get harder! After three rounds of questions, on ALL six books, the winners were announced. Dogwood Dolphins ADVANCED TO THE NEXT ROUND! We all started cheering!! The next round the team would compete against the top teams in SURREY! Wow!
Here they are practicing their self-regulation skills to help them calm down. Nerves were definitely higher at this high level of competition. The top ten teams from Surrey competed again in 3 rounds of questions. These questions were HARD! Even the librarian, and Mrs. Deamer, admitted they did not know many of the answers to these open ended detailed questions. They showed great composure and team work under pressure but unfortunately did not advance to the Provincial Round. We are so proud of you and your willingness to try something new!
We hope to see them all compete next year!
