The students have started their paper maché projects! Our next class is on Tuesday December 13th after lunch when the students will have the opportunity to finish their works of art. Please check your childs FreshGrade account for more information about the activity.
On Monday, we had Fiona from SkyeConsulting come in for a very engaging presentation about water and being water wise. The students learned about the water cycle, where our water comes from and even learned that we are drinking the same water dinosaurs drank millions of years ago! They were pretty grossed out by that!
Students had the oppotunity to ask many questions and had a chance to be scientists. They had a chance to test water samples to see what was in the water. Many new topics were introduced that the students and I would like to investigate. Some examples of these are: plastic islands and how we filter water. These could be great topics for some projects in the new year! Our class is an amazing bunch of curious students and I look forward to what is next! As I sit back and reflect upon my morning, I am so full of pride and amazement. The students of division 6 surpassed our expectations and we truly could not be more proud of their accomplishments. This morning, the class presented a song at our monthly assembly to kick off the Dogwood Food Drive. The words, Count on me, reverberated throughout the gym sending out the message that the people in our community can count on us this holiday season as we plan to run the most successful food drive at Dogwood. A big congratulations to Ethan and Naomi, who mustered up a lot of courage and spoke so beautifully in front of the entire school! They stepped out of their comfort zone and delivered a clear, and confident introduction for our presentation. Well done! After our epic presentation, we worked in teams to bake over 600 cookies for our Cookies for a Can event! Students worked cooperatively, and without complaint. They all pitched in to get the task done. Cookies will be sold tomorrow at recess for 50 cents or for a non-perishable food item. All donations and proceeds will go to help the Surrey Food Drive this holiday season. Thank you to our amazing parent volunteers, Mrs. Hayre, Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. Yu who worked so very hard to get all the cookies baked off. It was a lot of work and we could not have done it without you. THANK YOU! Division 6, you should be so proud of yourselves today. Our class theme of HEROES was really apparent today, as you all sported your invisible capes to become a community hero. We are so proud of your work and efforts. Congratulations, all of you! For parents who were not able to make the assembly, below is the video we sang along to, which includes some pictures and student art work. Unfortunately due to copy right regulation, I was unable to upload the video to YouTube. The file is attached below. You will have to download it to your device to view it. Thank you.
Today we spent the morning at the Surrey Art Gallery. For many, this was their first time visiting an art gallery and experiencing an installation. The theme of the tour and workshop was still life. The students had the chance to look at and critically analyze some interesting artwork on display in the gallery. After our tour, students had the opportunity to create an interesting still life composition and to draw these compositions using a view finder. We will be returning to the gallery in February for a clay workshop. We are all looking forward to that.
Today we were very fortunate to have Mavis, an Aboriginal presenter from the Cree First Nations, visit our class for an oral story telling presentation. The kids were so engaged as they listened, laughed and even sang along during the special presentation. We still have 2 other Aboriginal presenters booked for this school year, and are looking forward to having them in our class. Today our school community gathered to remember and to give thanks to those who have fought and continue to fight for our freedom. Division 6 has been working with Mr. Lee, our amazing music teacher, on a song entitled, "Clouds" by Cynthia Gray. The song truly reinforced our theme of peace and the students did such a beautiful job. We are so very proud of each and everyone of you. For those parents who could not make it to the assembly, I have attached a video of their dress rehearsal below. ENJOY! Miraculously, the rain stopped and we had a bright dry morning to be
outside! Olivia Allen from the City of Surrey Urban Forestry Parks Division met us in West Fraser Heights Park to show us our volunteer area. We have the job of removing the English Ivy that is choking out the native ferns and other plants. The kids where all given garden gloves and after given a safety and plant id lesson, they dived right in ripping out the ivy. They were excited to be helping and pulling out long vines of ivy. Olivia thought she may need to get us another project in the park by January with the way the kids were working! Way to go! |
