Part of the new curriculum consists of having our learning relate to the Core Competencies. Since November, division 6 has been working closely with the Surrey Food Bank for our Food Bank Project which directly relates to the Personal and Social competencies. (Personal and social competency is the set of abilities that relate to students' identity in the world, both as individuals and as members of their community and society. Personal and social competency encompasses the abilities students need to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world.)
In January, students had the opportunity to visit, and work as volunteers at the The Surrey Food Bank. It was an amazing opportunity and a great way to conclude our Food Bank Project. Students got to witness, first hand, what happens to the food they collected during our food drive in December. They had the chance to meet other volunteers and to interact with the clients who visit The Bank. For most it was a humbling experience as they were able to see how their hard work helped people in our community. It was so amazing to witness their smiles on their faces when they realized that they had made a positive impact in someone's life.
Many students expressed that they would like to return to The Bank to volunteer again. Unfortunately, the school volunteer sessions are booked until the end of the school year however, you can always sign up to volunteer as a family on Pro-D days or in the summer months. Check out: www.surreyfoodbank.org for more information.
At the February month end assembly Div. 6 will be presenting a video showing highlights of our Food Bank Project. We invite you all to come watch! If you cannot make it, have not fear! I will be sure to post it here on our site. Stay tuned!
